Herndon, VA

Geographic Location

Herndon is located in the Washington Dc suburb of Fairfax County.  Most people don’t know that the Town of Herndon is the largest town in Fairfax County.  It was originally a hub of dairy farming and vacation spot for area residents because of its convenient location along the L&R Railroad line which would eventually become Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD)  Railroad.    Like its nearby neighbor, Reston, Herndon is accessible via the Dulles Toll Road and the Silver Line of the Washington DC Metro.

Overall Personality

Herndon maintains a charming small-town feel despite the fact it is part of the Dulles Technology Corridor which Fortune magazine named the ‘Netplex’ because so many companies like AOL, and Verizon have headquarters there or are incorporated there.

Defining Characteristics

The Downtown Historic District of Herndon is what lets you know that you have arrived in the Town of Herndon.  The original train station and caboose are located there as well as the Town Hall and small local ‘Mom and Pop’ businesses which still reflect the feeling of the town the way it used to be in the early days.

Noteworthy Attractions

The Historic District is more than just the center of town.  It also boasts a promenade of the most delightful and appealing homes in the area.  There are Bungalows, Stately Center Hall Colonials, charming Victorians and even Craftsman style homes.  It is a pleasure to walk through town and then stop for a visit at a local favorite ‘Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern’.  Even if the burgers were not the best around the atmosphere is enough to keep you there for at least a round or two of your favorite beverage.

Types of Homes in the Area

Beyond the Historic downtown area there are many areas with newly built Custom Homes as well as homes that were built in the 1990’s and beyond.  There are some condominium and townhome developments, but the majority of the homes are true ‘bedroom community’ family homes and the residents take advantage of nearby schools, parks, camps, and community centers.

Annual Events

The biggest Annual Event is the Herndon Festival which is celebrated in June and lasts for 4 days. The Festival includes carnival rides, live music performances, Arts and Crafts vendors, and good old-fashioned Country Fair style food selections.  ‘Friday Night Lights’ has always been a much-loved and well-attended event which features artists from many different music genres.  In addition, there are Farmer’s Markets, as well as a Labor Day Festival, and Bike to Work Events.

Schools

Herndon is within the Fairfax School District, the 10th largest school district in the country, and nationally ranked academically.
